Welcome '07-'08 ADC Executives!
Written by Charles Thomas
Tuesday, 30 October 2007
Hello and welcome back to the ADC website,
Over the past two months the Applied Degree Council has been undergoing it's annual executive member selection process. Consequently, we have also had a change in the administration of our website, which should explain the lack of recent activity.
Currently, the selection process is complete and the new executive team is now fully in place. I would like to introduce the 2007 Executives of the Applied Degree Council:
Alice Laohaviraphab - Vice President
Robin Persaud - Chairperson
Hussein Abdulali - Treasurer
Doris Leung - Secretary
Arjun Chahal - Publicity Director
Charles Thomas - President
Ali Sheikh - Past President Advisor
These members, which includes myself, are committed to five objectives, all geared towards the applied degree students:
1. Represent the applied degree student body
2. Promote applied research
3. Advance out-of-lec/lab education
4. Provide a social environment
5. Obtain recognition outside of the institution
Essentially, we are here to allow you, the applied degree student, to have an enjoyable, well-rounded experience at Centennial College.
During this year (Fall and Winter semesters) ADC plans to take on as many initiatives as we can to fulfill these five goals.
Some ideas that we are considering are:
1. M33t and Gr33t - Part 2 (Objective 4)
2. Providing for senior degree students to supervise extra lab time for the rest of the students (Objective 2)
3. Providing a clear channel for student concerns/inquiries/ideas (Objective 1)
4. Provisioning tutorial sessions for students by students (Objective 3)
And there's more in the planning stages, including a Halo 3 competition (with prizes for the top players!).
As well, ADC is still on the lookout for student representatives from the various years! So if you're intelligent and you're a team player, then email myself or any other member of the board. You can even stop us in the halls if you know what we look like!.
On a final note, Keep your eye out (check the site often) for news on our next event! (M33t And Gr33t), Flyers and emails with details will be sent out soon!
Have a great Halloween folks!

Computer programmer learns it really is a beautiful mind
Written by Mark Toljagic
Saturday, 08 September 2007

Our Coordinator Iqbal Khan has been featured in a newspaper! Read the article below:

Mohammad Iqbal Khan is part of a vast army of researchers that has been pursuing the Holy Grail of the computer world: Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is the ability of man-made machines to duplicate intelligent behaviour, such as decision-making, planning and natural language. Computers and electronic devices can do amazing things these days, but critics of AI say that no actual comprehension by the AI computer has taken place, rendering the effort moot.

Textbook Lists are IN!
Written by Ali Sheikh
Thursday, 30 August 2007
As the Fall 07 semester quickly approaches, take a look at the ADC BookStore for textbook lists for all 4 semesters! Be sure to use the links provided in the Support ADC page when you buy books through Amazon.ca, Chapters.Indigo and AbeBooks. Your purchase will help fund ADC events and activities!

A special thanks goes to Iqbal Khan for helping with the list compilation.

P.S. Once again, I would recommend that you first speak with students in the semester ahead of you and purchase books from them before buying them online or instore. It'll save you money (at times up to 60%!) and you'll be helping a student in your program.

See you this Fall!

Fall 07 Courses - Calculus (Update 2)
Written by Ali Sheikh
Tuesday, 31 July 2007
UPDATE 2 August 9, 2007: To clarify, the MTH 320 is being offered in place of a Liberal elective. Students who have enrolled in a liberal elective will be deregistered when they contact Iqbal Khan to enrol in the Calculus course.

UPDATE August 9, 2007: As per Prof. Kieh Wong email:
Textbook:
James  Stewart,  “Single  Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts”, 3th Edition
  Brooks/Cole Publishing Company, ISBN 0534-40992-X

As of today, July 30, 2007, all degree students without holds are able to register for courses.
Those going into their 7th semester (4th year) looking to enroll in the MTH 320 Calculus with Applications course may have noticed that it is not listed on MyCentennial. I have just confirmed with Prof. Kieh Wong that the course is being offered. Prof. Iqbal Khan has been notified of the issue and will be in contact with the appropriate team to rectify this problem.

This post will be updated as more information is received.

50 Centennial College Applied Degree Entrance Bursaries, each valued at $1000, are available this fall to first-semester new-entrants who are enrolled full time in any applied degree program (0101 and 0103). This bursary is a grant awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. It is not a loan, and so there is no need to repay the money. It will go a long distance in helping recipients address the costs of applied degree studies Centennial College.

Deadline: July 27, 2007
